Ford Explorer MPG

The Ford Explorer is a midsize three-row SUV that's a great fit for families in Detroit, Warren, and Sterling Heights, MI. It offers lots of cargo room, space to stretch out, and safety features. Is it an efficient SUV though?

Crest Ford is pleased to offer this breakdown of the Ford Explorer MPG numbers by engine and powertrain, so you can see what to expect when you get out on the roads for your own adventures.

Ford Explorer Engine Lineup

The Ford Explorer offers two different powerful engines as well as a hybrid option. The base engine is an aptly named 2.3L EcoBoost® I-4 that generates 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. This powertrain comes standard on the base, XLT, and Limited trims.

If you're looking for a little more get up and go in your SUV, you'll be interested in the available 3.0L EcoBoost® V6. It helps the Platinum trim offer a smooth yet sporty drive with 365 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque.

For the Ford Explorer ST trim level, you'll get an even more exciting drive with an enhanced 3.0L EcoBoost® V6. It delivers up to 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque.

While all of the traditional gas-powered engines offer a dependable drive, the Explorer is also available with an efficient hybrid powertrain. The Ford Explorer hybrid model pairs a 3.3L V6 engine with an electric motor that generates 318 horsepower.

All Ford Explorer vehicles come standard with rear-wheel drive, but Intelligent 4WD (four-wheel drive) is also available. Plus, every available powertrain is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Fuel Efficiency of the 2.3L EcoBoost®

With the standard rear-wheel drive, the 2.3L EcoBoost® I-4 gets up to an EPA-estimated 21 MPG city and 28 MPG highway. The base engine is still efficient with four-wheel drive though, with an EPA-estimated 20 MPG city and 27 MPG highway.

V6 Fuel Economy

The powerful 3.0L EcoBoost® V6 proves that power and fuel economy can coexist. It helps you cover a lot of ground in between trips to the pump with an EPA-estimated 18 MPG city and 24 MPG highway.

While the Enhanced 3.0L EcoBoost® V6 can deliver even more muscle, it's just as efficient with the same EPA-estimated 18 MPG city and 24 MPG highway.

Hybrid Engine Ford Explorer MPG

The Ford Explorer hybrid features that perfect balance of power, capability, and efficiency. Not only does it offer an EPA-estimated 23 MPG city and 26 MPG highway, but it's also available with four-wheel drive.

Efficient Features

The Ford Explorer also offers technology that can help you maximize your fuel economy. For example, all the gas-powered engines come with Auto Start-Stop Technology. This feature saves gas by automatically turning the engine off when you come to a complete, then activating it again once you get moving.

Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control is also available to help you with highway driving. This smart safety feature can maintain a constant speed, while also monitoring the vehicle in front of you. If traffic slows down, it can adjust your speed or bring your SUV to a complete stop to prevent an accident.
